Housekeeper - Terms & Definition

Live-in housekeeper is a domestic professional who resides in the employer’s home and is responsible for maintaining the household’s cleanliness.

Duties may include daily cleaning, laundry, ironing, tidying, basic meal preparation, running errands, and maintaining household supplies. This role offers around-the-clock support and flexibility. Tasks can vary depending on the family’s needs and size of the property.

Housekeeper - Purpose & Duties

In exchange for their work, live-in housekeepers are provided with a private room and often meals, in addition to a salary. Allows for greater availability and support.

This position is ideal for trustworthy, discreet individuals with strong housekeeping skills who value stable accommodation and enjoy becoming part of a household’s daily rhythm and routines. It’s all up to the housekeeper to choose between a live-in or a live-out position.

Housekeeper - Salary & Education

Salary for a live-in housekeepers may receive lower cash salaries due to room and board being provided, but enjoy added benefits such as accommodation and meals.

Wages may range from minimum hourly rates to competitive full-time salaries, especially if specialized tasks or long-term service is required. Paid holidays and health contributions may be included in some contracts. Live-out workers usually earn more to compensate for travel and housing.

Housekeeper - Requirements & Visa

Relevant experience for housekeepers that employers is looking is at least 1–2 years. This may include residential or hotel cleaning, laundry and ironing.

For international placements a valid work visa or domestic worker visa is usually required, means a housekeeper normally need to apply for a work visa and have some basic bachelor degree’s education or long term skills. English language or Spanish are often expected for visa and daily communication

Negotiate Expenses with the Employer? 

In many cases, A housekeeper can discuss and negotiate visa and travel-related expenses with their employer. While some countries have specific rules about who is responsible for covering these costs, the arrangements can often vary depending on the employer’s preferences and the candidate’s circumstances.

It’s important that both parties communicate openly about expectations before the au pair travels. Some employer’s may offer to cover the full cost of the visa application, flight tickets, or airport transfers, while others may only contribute partially or expect the au pair to cover these expenses independently.

To avoid misunderstandings, these details should be agreed upon in writing – preferably as part of the au pair contract – before the placement begins.
